Power – the Ability to create and Destroy
Power is a source of influence and control over one’s own fate and the environment around them. With power comes the ability to create and destroy, to move forward and back, and to hold ones destiny in their own hands.
Power and Authority
Power is closely tied to authority, which is the legitimate right to exercise control. Power and authority are intertwined in the sense that having authority gives one the permission to exercise power. Authority is sanctioned by a mutual agreement between involved parties, and is granted to help one navigate their environment.
Types of Power
There are different types of power which have different implications.
- Coercive Power results from the threat of physical force, and is used to control someone’s behaviour.
- Reward Power is based on the exchange of rewards for compliance, in the form of recognition or incentives.
- Legitimate Power operates through established laws and rules, and is based on formal positions and titles.
- Expert Power is granted to those who have specialized knowledge, and are seen as authorities in their field of expertise.
Power and Politics
Power and politics go hand in hand and are often seen in all aspects of life. Political power, refers to the ability to influence and control policy decisions, in either a local or a broader scope. Political power is often sought and acquired through different social, economical and religious means.
Conclusion
Power is an important source of influence, authority, and control in various aspects of life. Power can be used positively or negatively and is strongly associated with politics. Power should always be used responsibly and ethically, so that the rights of others are respected and no one has to suffer in the process.
