Game of Thrones season 2

Game of Thrones season 2 returned to TV screens across the world on 1 April 2012, and it was just as spectacular as the first. Viewers were treated to nine brilliant episodes full of drama, adventure and of course emotionally charged fight scenes.

Set in the mythical land of Westeros, season 2 followed the ongoing story of the noble families who are vying for control of Westeros, while fending off an onslaught of zombie-like creatures known as the White Walkers, who have come down from the frozen north.

Highlights of the season include:

  • The Battle of the Blackwater Bay: This was the major battle of the season, as the combined forces of the Lannisters and their allies faced off against Stannis Baratheons’ invading fleet. The battle featured the use of wildfire and was a brilliant spectacle.
  • The Red Wedding: This shocking event took place in episode nine, where the two families of the Stark’s break their truce and brutally slaughter the Stark’s and their allies. This event resulted in a major plot twist and changed the dynamics of the whole show.

Reception and legacy

Season 2 proved to be just as successful, if not more so, than the first. It won numerous awards, including 11 Emmy awards. It was also credited with raising the profile of the show even further and led the way for subsequent successful seasons.
