How to change a tire?

How to Change a Tire

Changing a tire might seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite straightforward. A few simple steps can help make for a successful tire change.

Tools and Supplies Needed

Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:

  • Jack
  • Wrench
  • Spare tire
  • Owner’s manual

Steps

  • Locate Jack & Lug Wrench: The first step is to locate the jack and lug wrench stored in the trunk of your vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual to find out their exact location. In some vehicles, you may need to remove a section of carpeting or other item to gain access to them.
  • Place Jack: Make sure the car is in park, and the emergency brake is on. Place the jack on the ground, near the tire that needs to be changed, then rotate the jack handle to elevate it until there is enough room for the flat tire to be removed. Generally, the vehicle should only be lifted off the ground an inch or two.
  • Remove Lugs: Loosen the lug nuts a quarter turn each with the lug wrench before placing the jack under the car. Then, use the lug wrench to fully remove the lug nuts. Once the lug nuts have been removed, you can pull the wheel away from the car.
  • Put on Spare Tire: Align the spare tire with the wheel studs and place it onto the wheel hub. Then, thread the lug nuts back on to the wheel studs by hand. Do not fully tighten the lug nuts yet.
  • Tighten Lugs & Lower the Jack: Tighten the lug nuts, in a criss-cross pattern, smaller increments at a time until the wheel is snug, but not too tight. Then, lower the jack, removing it from under the vehicle. Put the flat tire, jack, and other supplies back in the trunk, and you are all set.

Changing a tire is not a difficult task. With this guide, you should be able to successfully change a tire in no time.
